Pablo Neruda Sonnet 17 Patch Adams

pablo neruda sonnet 17 patch adams

It is a love poem written by Pablo Neruda. I heard this poem being recited by Robin Williams in the movie Patch Adams and just fell in love with it. It helped me to.

Another beautiful sonnet by another wonderful poet was read to us in the film Patch Adams, the true-story of Dr. Hunter Patch Adams. In this scene, Patch, a patient-turned-medical student is seen mourning the death of this girlfriend. In her honour, Patch recites part of Pablo Neruda s Sonnet XVII Sometimes referred to by it s first line I Do Not Love You.

I do not love you as if you were salt-rose, or topaz,

or the arrow of carnations the fire shoots off.

I love you as certain dark things are to be loved,

in secret, between the shadow and the soul.

I love you as the plant that never blooms

but carries in itself the light of hidden flowers;

thanks to your love a certain solid fragrance,

risen from the earth, lives darkly in my body.

I love you without knowing how, or when, or from where.

I love you straightforwardly, without complexities or pride;

so I love you because I know no other way

than this: where I does not exist, nor you,

so close that your hand on my chest is my hand,

so close that your eyes close as I fall asleep.

Sonnet XVII by Pablo Neruda (Patch Adams) –[Multimedia-English videos]

Sonnet XVII – Pablo Neruda: Patch Adams

The poem used in the movie Patch Adams, was writen by the Chilean poet Pablo Neruda. It is Sonnet XVII of Neruda s 100 Love Sonnets available in English translation by Stephen Tapscott.

Here is the complete original poem in Spanish and its translation into English

I do not love you as if you were a rose made of salt or topaz

or an arrow of carnations spreading fire:

I love you the way certain dark things are loved,

secretly, between the shadow and the soul.

I love you like the plant that never blooms,

but conceals within itself the light of those flowers;

and, thanks to your love, the darkness of my body

houses the suffocating aroma that arose from the earth.

I love you without knowing how, when, or where from;

I love you straightforwardly, with neither problems nor pride:

I love you thus, not knowing how to love you otherwise

than this way whereby neither you nor I exist

so close that your hand on my chest is mine,

so close that your eyes grow heavy when I tire.

You can say anything you want, yes sir, but it s the words that sing, they soar and descendI bow to themI love them, I cling to them, I run them down, I bite into them, I melt them downI love words so muchThe unexpected onesThe ones I wait for greedily or stalk until, suddenly, they drop
